Hiring for Potential vs. Experience – A CIO’s Perspective

In my career, especially after moving to New Zealand, I quickly learned that the job
market there often prioritized candidates with "local relevant experience" over sheer
capability. This was a stark contrast to India, where candidates were often hired based
on "what they can do".
As a CIO, I’ve challenged this conventional thinking. I remember Sanjeev Sinha, an IT
manager in Wellington, who saw beyond my initial unemployment, judging my
"professional merits, sincerity and ability to work hard". He took a chance on my
potential. This experience solidified my belief that while experience provides a
foundation, potential – the raw hunger to learn, adapt, and innovate – is truly
indispensable, particularly in rapidly evolving fields like technology.
Sometimes, the best talent isn't found in a perfectly polished resume, but in an
unproven fire in the belly.
