In leadership, we often quantify appreciation through bonuses and promotions. While
essential, true recognition, I've learned, goes far beyond monetary incentives. It's about
acknowledging the human behind the performance.
I recall a moment in Mongolia, after we successfully migrated the bank's core system
from English to Mongolian, a project I immensely enjoyed for "helping the staff". The
Chairman of the board personally congratulated me, saying, "Sammy, you have given
eyes to my staff members". This heartfelt, impactful praise still "ring[s] like music in my
ears".
Genuine appreciation and seeing the direct impact of our work, articulated with sincerity,
can be a far more powerful motivator than any bonus alone. It creates loyalty, ignites
passion, and builds a truly connected team.
